SUMMARY:Think tanks and AI - online workshop and discussion
DESCRIPTION:How think tanks are using AI\, which tools are the most useful and what guardrails each organisation puts around their use is a hot topic across all our different member networks. In May\, we will therefore be hosting an online workshop and discussion for anyone with an interest in this area to share their experiences\, suggestions and recommendations. \nBy the end of the workshop we hope that everyone will have a better understanding of how other think tanks are approaching the AI question\, some recommendations on particularly useful tools and suggestions for how to protect and encourage your teams to incorporate and manage AI use in your organisation. \nThis workshop is open to everyone in the membership – not just team leaders. We encourage those who are experimenting and using AI in their daily work to join the conversation as well as those in leadership roles who are deciding AI policy for their organisation. \nWe want to discuss AI in research\, communications and operations so the invite is open to every function in a think tank and all levels of seniority. We will not have a central presenter\, Smart Thinking will instead be facilitating a discussion\, so the workshop will be very participatory. It would be great if we could have each member think represented at the workshop to get the full range of how think tanks are working through this fast-evolving area. \nThe workshop will be split into two sections: \nPart 1 – What AI tools are you using and what for?\nTo have a clear idea of how think tanks are using AI we thought it would be helpful to gather a list of the different tools people across think tanks are using either for research\, data\, operations and communications (or anything!). We will be digging into what specific tasks people find them helpful for and compiling a list of tools that we can then share with attendees after the session. \nPart 2 – Encouraging experimentation and implementing guardrails\nAfter establishing how people are using AI in their work we will move the discussion onto how each think tank is both encouraging their teams to experiment and make the most out of AI but also what systems\, processes or guardrails they have put in place to protect both their teams and the organisation if things go wrong. \nIf you would like to join this webinar then please register for a place on the link below and you will be sent the link. \nThis webinar is worth 50 CPD points. \nRegister for your place

SUMMARY:Strategic communications training (part 2)
DESCRIPTION:Members – £220+VAT         Non-members – £395+VAT   (150 CPD points)\nDo you work in think tank communications? Do you want to become more strategic in your work? Are you looking for some ideas on how to professionalise and boost the impact of your work? This two-part training session has been designed to give think tank comms people a space to think more broadly about building their communications strategy and becoming more effective in their work. \nThink tank communications teams play a crucial role in successfully disseminating the research\, events and policy ideas of their think tank. But in a fast-paced role there is often little time to think more broadly about whether the current way of doing things is the most effective. These two half-day training sessions are to give comms staff at all different levels of experience the chance to think more strategically\, to check in with new ways to approach media and comms and to learn from other professionals in the sector. \nIn part 1 we looked at how to build a successful communications strategy both internally and externally\, its purpose and core components. Part 2 follows on from this by looking in more detail at the different elements to consider when building out your strategy and working towards your communications objectives. \nThroughout the session attendees will be taking part in exercises and use their own draft plans and organisation objectives to build out a comprehensive communications strategy. There will also be time and space for sharing learnings from your own work with each other and seeing what other think tanks have had success with. \nAttendance at Strategic Communications Training Part 1 is not required to attend Part 2 but it is recommended. \nCourse outline\n\nRecap from Part 1\n\n\nAligning your tone of voice\n\n– With organisational values and audience expectations \n– Tone of voice in different communication outputs \n\nUnderstanding the purpose of a channel strategy\n\n– Choosing the right channels for the right audiences \n\nEffectively using different channels\n\n– Identifying channels that amplify your story \n– Matching your message to the right outlet \n– Press releases and pitching publications \n\nCampaign planning\n\n– Mapping key organisational moments \n– Creating internal communications systems \n– Anticipating big announcements \n\nMeasuring impact and refining\n\n– Evaluating your strategy against goals and audiences \n– Learning loops \n\nBringing it all together\n\n\nRegister for your place*\n\n*Your organisation will not be invoiced until your place is confirmed. \nThis training session is worth 150 CPD points.

SUMMARY:How think tanks can use Big Data for research
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to invite you and your colleagues to our next member-only webinar. There is no limit on places per think tank for this webinar so please feel free to share widely. All spaces are included in your membership subscription!\nBig data has changed what’s possible for think tanks. With the right tools\, research teams can now go deeper\, move faster\, and deliver more detailed analysis – even on fast-moving sectors that SIC codes still miss. \nBut more data doesn’t always mean better data. \nIn this webinar\, Paul Swinney\, Chief Economist at The Data City\, will explore how big data is changing policy research and how to make the most of it. You’ll learn how leading think tanks are using real-time company data to uncover emerging sectors\, map local economies\, and publish sharper\, faster insights. \nThis is a practical session for researchers and analysts who want to do more. \n\nSpeaker bio\nPaul is Chief Economist at The Data City\, where he oversees the production of and research undertaken using the company’s data. \nBefore this he spent 16 years at Centre for Cities. Do you want to feel more confident in the entire writing process? It is a practical\, tailored session that will take you through the mechanics of writing and style\, how to incorporate data and plan your work as well as adapting your work for different mediums and to more effectively tell a story.
