SUMMARY:Writing for Impact 3 - Storytelling\, op-eds and blogs
DESCRIPTION:Members – £220 + VAT         Non-members – £395 +VAT\nIn today’s fragmented media and political ecosystem it is not enough to simply produce a policy report to promote your ideas and research\, you need to be using all the different writing vehicles available to promote and expand the reach of your work. These include opinion pieces\, blogs and other outlets. Being able to successfully adapt your writing style to these different mediums will help you increase the impact of your research as well as develop your overall writing skills. \nThis half-day training session not only looks in detail at how you can write good articles and blogs but it also takes attendees through how you weave storytelling into your work. Being able to construct a narrative helps you to make complex ideas understandable\, helps your audience to remember your key points and helps you persuade non-expert audiences like journalists\, civil servants and parliamentarians of your core arguments. \nThis training will help you understand how storytelling works in a think tank context. It will also look in depth at what elements you need to create interesting and compelling op-eds and blogs and give you the tools to develop your style for each format. \nAttendees will have the opportunity to use their current research and projects for the exercises in this session and will leave the session with core tips and techniques to help them become better writers. \nCourse outline\nStorytelling\n\nWhat is storytelling?\nStorytelling in a think tank context\nThe 5 Cs of storytelling\nStory framework techniques for research\n\nOp-eds\n\nWhat makes an op-ed work?\nWho is an op ed for and why are you writing one?\nPlanning your piece\nAdapting your writing style\n\nBlogs\n\nSourcing blog ideas\nStructure decisions\nPlanning a blog\nAdapting your writing style\n\nYou will be in a group with a mixture of different think tanks so you can learn from your peers as well as the trainer. \n\nRegister for your place*\n*Your organisation will not be invoiced until your place is confirmed.

SUMMARY:Strategic communications training (part 1)
DESCRIPTION:Members – £220 + VAT         Non-members – £395 +VAT\nDo you work in think tank communications? Do you want to become more strategic in your work? Are you looking for some ideas on how to professionalise and boost the impact of your work? This two-part training session has been designed to give think tank comms people a space to think more broadly about building their communications strategy and becoming more effective in their work. \nThink tank communications teams play a crucial role in successfully disseminating the research\, events and policy ideas of their think tank. But in a fast-paced role there is often little time to think more broadly about whether the current way of doing things is the most effective. \nThese two half-day training sessions are to give comms staff at all different levels of experience the chance to think more strategically\, to check in with new ways to approach media and comms and to learn from other professionals in the sector. \nPart 1 begins by looking at the core components of a successful communications strategy\, its purpose and how you can advocate for the role of communications within your think tank. We cover how to define your communications goals and make them actionable. This session also looks at how to understand and map out your audiences and develop your key messages. \nThroughout the session attendees will be taking part in exercises and using their own organisation objectives to build out a communications strategy. There will also be time and space for sharing learnings from your own work with each other and seeing what other think tanks have had success with. \nAttendance at this training session is not required for Strategic Communications Training part 2 but is recommended. Part two takes place on Thursday 16th July\, 9am – 1pm.  \nPart two will look at understanding the purpose of a channel strategy and how you can effectively use different channels\, as well as a deeper look at campaign planning and measuring impact and refining your strategy. At the end of the two sessions you will have a completed communications strategy document.   \nCourse outline \nIntroductions and objectives \nThe purpose of a communications strategy \n\nReaching the right audience at the right time with the right message\nAdvocating for the role of comms internally\nCreating strong information flows\n\nDefining communication goals \nUnderstanding and mapping audiences \n\nPrimary\, secondary and internal audiences\nPrioritising audiences\n\nDeveloping a strong key message \n\nWhat makes a strong key message?\n\nBringing it all together \nWrap up and learnings \n\nRegister for your place*\n*Your organisation will not be invoiced until your place is confirmed.
