From devolution-aware to devolution-able: how to expand your work and impact across the devolved nations

It is very easy to get stuck in the Westminster bubble and focus all your efforts on trying to influence the Westminster government and parties. However, that means you miss out on the chance to broaden the reach and impact of your work across all four nations of the UK. The devolved governments and parliaments across the UK that are looking for new ideas, good policy research, and the latest thinking on how to tackle the challenges facing us all. With general elections in Wales and Scotland this May, there’s never been a more important time to engage. This training session will take you through all that you need to know about better engaging with politics outside Westminster, from a team who are plugged in across the UK.

For this training session Smart Thinking is delighted to host the up and coming think tank PolicyWISE as they take attendees through how they might better engage with the devolved governments, parliaments, and policy. With the prospect of each devolved government being led by a nationalist First Minister this year, the rise of Reform UK and the Greens, and the potential collapse of the Labour and Conservative vote – there are significant think-tank opportunities and challenges to be navigated.

PolicyWISE have developed a unique cross-nation approach to policy research and analysis and are uniquely placed to help develop your knowledge, skills and understanding.

In this session we will be taking a deep dive into PolicyWISE’s latest research to get a unique view on the good, bad, and ugly of cross-nation working and share practical actions you can take to make your policy research, analysis and learning truly work across the UK.

In this training session you will:

• Learn the basics of devolution across the UK’s nations and the dynamics of the different parliaments and governments;
• Gain practical insights into how to engage with relevant policy actors and institutions;
• Learn how to avoid the common mistakes in language and terminology that can undermine effective engagement;
• Discover new policy and political analysis of devolved issues and how they relate to English and UK developments, enabling more confident and effective engagement across the UK’s diverse governance landscape.

You will be working with your peers from other think tanks and attendees will be encouraged to share best practice, build networks and learn from each other.
