Think tanks and AI – online workshop and discussion

Tuesday May 19 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

How think tanks are using AI, which tools are the most useful and what guardrails each organisation puts around their use is a hot topic across all our different member networks. In May, we will therefore be hosting an online workshop and discussion for anyone with an interest in this area to share their experiences, suggestions and recommendations.

By the end of the workshop we hope that everyone will have a better understanding of how other think tanks are approaching the AI question, some recommendations on particularly useful tools and suggestions for how to protect and encourage your teams to incorporate and manage AI use in your organisation.

This workshop is open to everyone in the membership – not just team leaders. We encourage those who are experimenting and using AI in their daily work to join the conversation as well as those in leadership roles who are deciding AI policy for their organisation.

We want to discuss AI in research, communications and operations so the invite is open to every function in a think tank and all levels of seniority. We will not have a central presenter, Smart Thinking will instead be facilitating a discussion, so the workshop will be very participatory. It would be great if we could have each member think represented at the workshop to get the full range of how think tanks are working through this fast-evolving area.

The workshop will be split into two sections:

Part 1 – What AI tools are you using and what for?

To have a clear idea of how think tanks are using AI we thought it would be helpful to gather a list of the different tools people across think tanks are using either for research, data, operations and communications (or anything!). We will be digging into what specific tasks people find them helpful for and compiling a list of tools that we can then share with attendees after the session.

Part 2 – Encouraging experimentation and implementing guardrails

After establishing how people are using AI in their work we will move the discussion onto how each think tank is both encouraging their teams to experiment and make the most out of AI but also what systems, processes or guardrails they have put in place to protect both their teams and the organisation if things go wrong.
